There is a vast spectrum of makeup looks people wear while working out. There are those brave individuals who choose to go bare, removing any makeup whatsoever, and then there are girls who opt for doing their full face, falsies and all. I think most of us fall in the middle, going for the “Trying To Look Like I’m Not Trying But Still Trying” look. I like to keep it simple and natural, but still cover up imperfections and accentuate some features. I would describe it as the makeup equivalent of “Oh this old thing? I just threw this on!” But even when wearing only a few light products, you still run the risk of unsightly smudging and clogged pores if you aren’t careful. Follow these tips to keep your makeup looking flawless while still pushing yourself at the gym.
Frankly, for me, not wearing eye makeup means one of two things: either I look like I haven’t slept in forty years, or I look like I’m under twelve years old. Either way, not ok. But perfect eye-makeup pre-gym can easily turn into racoon-chic after a sweaty workout session. The key to avoiding this is using waterproof mascara. Now that may sound like an easy solution, but anyone who’s ever used waterproof mascara knows that there’s nothing easy about it. While it could (probably) withstand a nuclear war, it’s generally clumpy and dries looking stiff, a look that was only popular circa seventh grade. My best tip for making WPM work more like regular mascara is to place the tube in between the plates of your flat iron for a few seconds while it’s heating up. The heat liquifies the product in the tube so when you pull the wand out, it separates more evenly on your lashes, preventing clumps.
When it comes to lip products for working out, the real issue we run into is feathering. Too often does my lipstick venture over enemy lines from my lip to my chin, creating a glamorous look resembling someone just having punched me in the face. Additionally, being able to wipe off your face with a towel or drink from a water bottle without the risk of clown lips is non-negotiable. That being said, wearing a matte-24 hour lipstick at the gym can look a little extra. Remember, we want natural. I like to go with a very slightly tinted lip balm to keep my lips hydrated, but still add some color where it’s needed. I try to stick to light pinks and nudes just in case a little bit does come off in the midst of a heavy workout. Neutral shades are way safer than bright red when it comes to your chin or teeth. Bonus tip: every time you take a sip from your water, lick your lips beforehand! Your lip product will stay in place and won’t come off on the bottle.
This is the most crucial component of most anyone’s makeup routine, but also the trickiest when planning for workouts. When you sweat, your pores open up, so when you load up your face with heavy products, they can seep deep into your skin, clogging your pores and causing acne. For this reason, I like to use light makeup specifically designed for active wear. Never take chances with your skin, ladies! Sweat Cosmetics uses all-natural ingredients that don’t harm your skin, even through the toughest workout. My personal favorite products are the Glow Hard Mineral Bronzer and the Gleam on Mineral Illuminator. They both feel really lightweight on your skin and have a slight sparkle to them, which adds an extra highlight to your cheekbones. They also both use Sweat’s twist brush technology, which allows you to turn the bottom of the tube and dispense exactly how much product you need. It’s way more sanitary than traditional methods of makeup application, plus it’s so easy to slip into your gym bag. You also want to make sure that you protect yourself from the sun’s harmful UV rays whenever your daily workout takes place outside -- even if it’s cloudy. All of Sweat’s products contain SPF, an essential when it comes to healthy skin.
You deserve to still look glamorous when you’re working out. The right products go such a long way when it comes to comfort, durability, and overall style. A little bit of makeup can make a huge difference in your confidence levels, and therefore improve the entire quality of your workout.
